The phrase “a coffin fell from the sky” sounds almost impossible, but the real story is stranger in a quieter way. In 1899, near the village of Bagicz in Poland, coastal erosion caused a coffin made from a hollowed-out oak tree to fall from a cliff near the Baltic Sea. Inside, archaeologists found the well-preserved skeleton of a woman buried with objects that immediately made the discovery feel unusual.

More than a century later, the mystery has not fully disappeared. Researchers have continued studying the burial because the woman’s bones seemed older than the coffin and grave goods around her. Newer scientific methods, including isotope analysis and dating studies, suggest the answer may involve diet, migration, and the way marine foods can distort radiocarbon dating.
