Ancient Europe did not look as visually uniform as many people imagine. New ancient DNA research suggests that dark skin, dark hair and dark eyes remained common across much of Europe for far longer than older assumptions suggested, with lighter pigmentation spreading gradually rather than appearing all at once.
The study analysed pigmentation from 348 ancient genomes across Eurasia, covering roughly 45,000 years of human history. The findings, reported by ZME Science and based on research led by Silvia Perretti and colleagues, show that lighter skin traits increased over time, but dark pigmentation persisted in many European populations well into later prehistoric periods.
