A man buried near Lake Kitka in Kuusamo, northern Finland, around the turn of the 17th century remained mysterious for decades after his grave was discovered in the 1970s. Researchers knew the burial was culturally significant, but questions about his origins, movements, diet, and social role remained unresolved.

A new University of Turku-led study combined ancient DNA with isotope analysis to reconstruct his life. The results linked him genetically with historical and present-day Sámi populations and suggested that he travelled far beyond Finland, possibly spending part of his youth in Iceland before returning to the Kuusamo region shortly before his death.
