A breakfast cereal cannot prevent a stroke by itself, but the right type can support a diet associated with healthier blood pressure, cholesterol and blood sugar. Experts favour cereals made mainly from whole grains, with plenty of fibre and little added sugar or sodium.
The strongest evidence concerns dietary patterns and cereal categories, not individual brands. Large observational studies have linked whole-grain cold cereals and bran with lower ischaemic stroke risk, but they do not prove that eating one specific product directly prevents an event.
