Scientists have completed the first human trial of a vaccine designed to protect against an entire family of coronaviruses rather than one known strain. Developed by the University of Cambridge and its spin-out company DIOSynVax, the experimental vaccine uses computer modelling and machine learning to anticipate viral threats before they spread widely.
The early results are promising, but the vaccine is not yet proven to prevent infection, serious illness or future pandemics. The Phase 1 study primarily tested safety and immune responses in a small group, with larger trials still required before the technology can approach public use.
