‘Almost All’ Plant-Based Meat Alternatives Found to Contain Poisonous Toxins
Study finds fungal toxins in UK plant-based foods but within safe EU levels, raising concerns about cumulative exposure.
The Study Tested 212 UK Products
Every Product Contained at Least One Mycotoxin
Mycotoxins Come From Fungi
The Levels Were Reported as Low
The Concern Is Cumulative Exposure
Serious Exposure Can Harm Health
Plant-Based Does Not Automatically Mean Risk-Free
More Regulation May Be Needed
Vulnerable Consumers May Need More Attention
Variety Is Still the Safest Message

Plant-based burgers, vegan sausages, vegetarian chicken pieces and dairy-free milks are often marketed as cleaner, lighter or more sustainable choices. But new research on UK supermarket products has added a more complicated detail: these foods can also contain naturally occurring fungal toxins known as mycotoxins.
The headline sounds alarming, but the finding needs careful reading. Researchers found detectable mycotoxins in every one of the 212 plant-based meat alternatives and drinks they tested, yet the levels were reported to be below recommended EU guideline limits. The concern is not that one vegan burger is dangerous, but that heavy reliance on these products could increase cumulative exposure over time.
