Some dogs do more than play with the youngest members of a household. They remain close, watch quietly and respond to children with an unusual mixture of patience, affection and concern.

That behaviour can resemble caregiving, although it appears differently across breeds. In some, it is calm companionship; in others, it becomes watchfulness, protection or a constant desire to stay nearby.

“Motherly” is a metaphor, not a guaranteed breed trait. Individual temperament, socialisation and respectful handling matter, and children should never be left alone with any dog.
