The Food Expiration Date Myth People Need to Stop Believing

The biggest myth about food expiration dates is simple: many people believe the date on the package always means the day the food becomes unsafe. That misunderstanding sends plenty of perfectly edible food into the bin, even when the real issue is quality, texture or flavour rather than immediate danger.

The truth depends on the wording, the product and how it has been stored. The USDA says food product dating is generally about quality, not safety, and recommends “Best if Used By” to reduce confusion and food waste. The FDA and USDA also say this label means quality may decline after the date, but the product may still be consumed if handled properly.
