A Strange Object Entered the Solar System — Scientists Are Baffled

A strange visitor from beyond the solar system has entered our cosmic neighborhood, and scientists are watching it closely. The object is called 3I/ATLAS, and it is only the third confirmed interstellar object ever detected passing through the solar system, after 1I/ʻOumuamua in 2017 and 2I/Borisov in 2019.

The important point is that “strange” does not mean alien. National Geographic’s coverage of the discovery makes that clear: this is not evidence of extraterrestrial technology, but a rare natural object that formed around another star before drifting into our solar system. That alone makes it scientifically valuable, because it gives astronomers a temporary sample of material from somewhere else in the galaxy.
