A new satellite finding has added fresh tension around one of Asia’s most contested maritime sites. Images obtained by Reuters showed what analysts described as a suspected structure at the entrance to Scarborough Shoal in the South China Sea — but later imagery suggested the object was no longer there.
The shoal, known in China as Huangyan Dao, has been under China’s de facto control since 2012 and remains claimed by the Philippines. The images, taken in late May 2026 by commercial satellite imagery provider Vantor, have prompted a Philippine investigation and renewed concern about activity around the disputed atoll.
