One spoonful of smooth peanut butter often leads quickly to another. Its appeal does not come from a single ingredient, but from a carefully balanced combination of roasted flavour, sweetness, salt, fat and an unusually smooth texture.

Markita Lewis, a registered dietitian consulted by Simply Recipes, says peanut butter’s lasting popularity also reflects familiarity and nutrition. Food scientist Laurel Dunn adds that commercial varieties intensify an already appealing food by blending peanuts with sugar until the mixture becomes exceptionally easy to eat.
