Archaeologists Stunned After Uncovering Hidden WW1 Trenches

Archaeologists searching for the remains of a Tudor royal palace in Bedfordshire unexpectedly uncovered First World War training trenches instead. The discovery was made during a community excavation at Ampthill Great Park in June 2026.

The team already knew soldiers had trained in the wider area, but the preserved trench structure, decayed sandbags and unusual communication wires revealed a military story beneath ground targeted for evidence of Henry VIII’s former residence.
