Scientists Reveal What Happened to 12 People Trapped in Antarctica for 10 Months

A ten-month mission at Concordia Station in Antarctica has given scientists a rare look at how small teams behave when isolation, confinement and extreme conditions last for months. The station sits on the Antarctic plateau, where winter temperatures can fall to minus 80°C and outside access becomes severely limited.

The study, led by Jan Schmutz of the University of Zurich and Andrea Cantisani of the University of Bern, followed 12 crew members during an overwintering mission. Its findings matter far beyond Antarctica because Concordia is often treated as one of Earth’s closest real-world comparisons for future Moon or Mars missions.
