What Is a Seismic Doublet? The Rare Phenomenon Behind Venezuela’s Twin Quakes

Venezuela’s earthquake disaster began with two major shocks arriving almost as one event. On June 24, 2026, a magnitude 7.2 earthquake struck southeast of Yumare, followed only 39 seconds later by a magnitude 7.5 shock in the same area.

The US Geological Survey classified the sequence as a seismic doublet. The term describes an unusual pairing that differs from the familiar pattern of one dominant earthquake followed by much smaller aftershocks.
