Around 15 million people in the UK are now thought to be under-saving for retirement, according to the Pensions Commission’s interim report. Without action, that number could rise to 19 million, leaving millions facing a much weaker income in later life than they may expect.
The warning is especially serious because it does not only affect people with no pension at all. It also includes workers saving too little, people relying only on minimum auto-enrolment contributions, women with lower pension wealth, self-employed workers outside workplace schemes, and people who may need the state to fill a much bigger gap than planned.
