A proposed UK breeding assessment has sparked concern because it could affect dozens of popular dog breeds if it becomes law. The issue is not a simple ban on owning these dogs. The proposal focuses on whether licensed breeders should be allowed to breed dogs with physical traits linked to poor health.

The Innate Health Assessment uses 10 visual health checks, including muzzle length, natural leg length, straight legs, smooth skin, normal eyelids, correct bite, non-bulging eyes, and a tail long enough to wag. PETA says around 67 breeds could be affected if the system becomes mandatory, while the assessment is currently voluntary and would mainly affect licensed breeding, not existing pets.
