Motorists are being warned that behaviour once likely to attract penalty points can now result in a short driving ban and a much heavier income-based fine. The revised framework covers careless driving, including distractions, unsafe manoeuvres and driving without sufficient rest.
However, this is not a new UK-wide offence introduced in July 2026. It is a revised sentencing guideline that has applied to adults appearing before courts in England and Wales since July 1, 2025.
