Scientists have not discovered one universal cause of every case of inflammatory bowel disease. Instead, researchers from the University of Oxford, Newcastle University and Cambridge University Hospitals have identified a distinct autoimmune mechanism that appears to drive illness in a measurable subgroup of patients.
The study, published in the New England Journal of Medicine on June 10, 2026, analysed more than 4,900 people with Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis. It connects a long-known genetic risk factor to antibodies that disable one of the immune system’s most important controls on intestinal inflammation.
