Fragments of Capel Celyn, a Welsh village deliberately flooded more than 60 years ago, can reappear when water levels fall at Llyn Celyn reservoir. Roads, foundations and tree stumps emerge from the exposed ground during prolonged hot, dry periods.
The sight is dramatic, but this is not an intact settlement rising from the water. Most buildings were demolished before flooding, and the surviving remains carry a painful history involving displacement, political power and the loss of a Welsh-speaking community.
