The largest known meteorite on Earth is not hidden in a museum vault or sealed inside a laboratory. It is still lying where it was discovered, on the Hoba West farm near Grootfontein in northern Namibia, a vast metal slab that seems too massive to have arrived quietly.

That is what makes the mystery so strange. The Hoba meteorite weighs about 60 tonnes today, yet there is no obvious crater around it, forcing scientists to explain how something so heavy could land without leaving the kind of dramatic scar people expect.
