Scientists Develop a Smart Wound Bandage — and the Results Are Stunning

Scientists at Brown University have developed an experimental wound dressing that responds only when it detects enzymes produced by harmful bacteria. Instead of releasing antibiotics continuously, the material keeps the medicine locked inside until signs of infection trigger its delivery.

The bacteria-responsive hydrogel cleared infected wounds and accelerated healing in mice, outperforming a commonly used antimicrobial dressing in the experiments. The findings were published in Science Advances on March 20, 2026, but the technology remains preclinical and has not yet been tested or approved for routine treatment in humans.
