Don’t Miss This Sky Phenomenon — Venus Is About to Disappear

Venus is about to pull off one of the month’s most striking sky events, but only viewers in the right places will see the full trick. On June 17, 2026, the Moon will pass directly in front of Venus in an event known as a lunar occultation, briefly hiding the planet before it reappears from behind the lunar edge.

NASA says the occultation will be visible from parts of the United States, Canada, Brazil and Venezuela. Skywatchers outside the exact path may still see a close pairing of the Moon and Venus, but there is one essential warning: because the event happens in daylight for many locations, binoculars or telescopes must never be pointed anywhere near the Sun.
