Serena Williams returned to Wimbledon singles after four years away with her family gathered inside Centre Court. Yet her youngest daughter, two-year-old Adira River Ohanian, could not remain courtside once the match began.

The reason had nothing to do with disruption, security or special treatment. Adira was affected by a longstanding Wimbledon rule that prevents every child under five from entering the tournament’s main show courts during play.
