FIFA Fan-Voted 2026 World Cup Ideal Lineup Sparks Debate

The International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) has revealed the ideal lineup for the 2026 World Cup, which this time was based on the votes of fans around the world, in a move that sparked widespread debate due to its departure from the selections of technical committees and its complete reliance on the opinions of fans.

The announcement came following the end of the tournament"s competitions, as FIFA"s official statistics website published the list of the best 11 players, while media reports, including the Spanish network Cadena SER and media outlets affiliated with Real Madrid, explained that the final lineup was determined through online fan voting.

The list included players from seven different national teams and adopted a 4-3-3 tactical formation, combining the tournament"s most prominent stars with several names that captured the fans" admiration with their performances.

Mbappé leads the lineup"s attack alongside Messi and Haaland

Frenchman Kylian Mbappé led the frontline after finishing the tournament as the top scorer with 10 goals, claiming the Golden Boot award and confirming his exceptional presence in the World Cup.

As well, the lineup included Argentine legend Lionel Messi, who scored 8 goals and led his country to the World Cup final for the third time in his international career.

Norwegian Erling Haaland completed the attacking trio after scoring 7 goals, helping Norway achieve its best historical milestone by reaching the quarter-finals in the first major tournament he has played with his national team.

Rodri, Olise, and Bellingham dominate the midfield

In the midfield, fans chose Spaniard Rodri, winner of the Golden Ball award for the tournament"s best player, after he delivered an outstanding performance and successfully completed 799 passes with a 93% accuracy rate.

The list also included Frenchman Michael Olise, who assisted 7 goals during the tournament, setting a new record for the number of assists in a single edition of the World Cup.

The midfield setup was completed by Englishman Jude Bellingham, who made English national team history by becoming the first "Three Lions" player to score 7 goals in a single edition of the World Cup.

Defense line brings together France, Argentina, and Spain

The lineup included Frenchman Dayot Upamecano in central defense alongside Argentine Lisandro Martínez, while Spaniards Pedro Porro and Marc Cucurella occupied the fullback positions, having played every minute of the tournament without being substituted.

The biggest surprise of the lineup came in the goalkeeper position, as fans preferred Cape Verde national team goalkeeper Vozinha over Spaniard Unai Simón, despite the latter winning the Golden Glove award as the best goalkeeper in the 2026 World Cup.

Although Simón was the most successful goalkeeper in terms of results, Vozinha received massive fan support following his impressive performance, making 18 critical saves and delivering outstanding displays against major teams to secure his place in the ideal lineup thanks to fan votes, in one of the tournament"s most controversial selections.
