UK Sick Notes Set to Be Scrapped in Benefits Shake-Up

Britain’s sick note system could be heading for one of its biggest changes in years, as ministers look for new ways to stop people being written off work without receiving practical support. The change is not simply about paperwork. It sits inside a wider debate over illness, employment, welfare spending, GP pressure, and what should happen when someone is too unwell to work but may still need help returning safely.

The proposal being reported does not mean every sick worker will suddenly lose protection. Instead, the government is preparing trials that would change how “fit notes” are issued in some cases, with fewer people relying only on a GP note and more being directed toward work, health, or rehabilitation support. GB News reported that fit notes could be scrapped in certain circumstances under new trial plans linked to the benefits system.
