Powerful New Diabetes Pill Cuts Weight and Lowers Blood Sugar

A once-daily experimental pill has delivered strong results for adults with type 2 diabetes, substantially lowering long-term blood sugar while also producing meaningful weight loss. The medicine, called elecoglipron, was tested in the Phase 2b SOLSTICE trial across nine countries.

The findings were published in The Lancet and presented at the American Diabetes Association’s 2026 Scientific Sessions. Elecoglipron is not yet approved for routine use, but AstraZeneca is now advancing it into a larger Phase 3 programme.
