UK Drivers Warned About ‘Illegal’ Driveway Habit Many Think Is Fine

UK drivers have been warned that parking on a driveway may still be illegal if the property does not have an approved dropped kerb. Many people assume that once a front garden or driveway belongs to them, they can drive across the pavement and park there without any issue.

The problem is the pavement. Under Section 184 of the Highways Act 1980, vehicles need a proper crossing over the footway to legally access private land from the road. Drivers who create or use access without permission may face enforcement, and unauthorised dropped kerbs can lead to fines of up to £1,000.
