Waking Up Randomly at 3am? NHS Doctor Explains What It Means

Waking up at 3am can feel oddly specific, especially when it happens more than once. The house is quiet, the clock is accusing, and your brain suddenly feels more awake than it should be.

But the explanation is usually less mysterious than it feels. Night waking can be linked to normal sleep cycles, lighter sleep in the second half of the night, stress, anxiety, alcohol, bedroom conditions, or insomnia when it becomes frequent and hard to recover from. The NHS lists waking several times during the night or waking early and being unable to return to sleep among symptoms of insomnia.
