FIFA Opens Probe Into Spain and Argentina Final Clashes

FIFA has opened an official investigation into the events that unfolded at the end of the 2026 World Cup final, after Spain’s title celebrations turned into clashes with Argentina players and members of the coaching staff on the pitch at MetLife Stadium.

FIFA confirmed that its disciplinary committee has tasked a prosecutor specializing in disciplinary and ethical matters with reviewing all incidents that followed the final whistle, in preparation for taking the appropriate action against those involved, whether players or officials, with the possibility of imposing fines on the Argentine Football Association.

Clashes between the two teams’ players after the final whistle

The crisis began immediately after the match, which Spain won 1-0 to claim the World Cup title, as several Argentina players got into altercations with La Roja players during the celebrations on the field.

Footage showed Nahuel Molina, Leandro Paredes, and Thiago Almada, in addition to assistant coach Roberto Ayala, taking part in the clashes, which involved pushing and physical contact between both sides.

The match’s electronic system initially indicated that Paredes had been sent off, before the decision was later changed, while FIFA confirmed that the player did not receive any disciplinary sanction during the match.

Meanwhile, Argentina ended the match with ten men after Enzo Fernández was sent off in stoppage time for receiving his second yellow card.

Reports indicate that the first spark came during Spain’s celebrations, when Rodri passed by Nahuel Molina, before contact between them quickly escalated into a group confrontation.

Several players, including Eric García and Gavi, soon intervened, before the clashes widened with the involvement of Paredes and Almada, while assistant coach Roberto Ayala was seen during attempts to confront some Spain players.

Sanctions could affect players and the Argentine Football Association

According to FIFA’s disciplinary regulations, the world governing body has the authority to impose a range of sanctions, starting with financial fines and potentially extending to suspensions for the players or officials involved if they are found to have breached rules of conduct and fair play.

The investigation committee will also examine all circumstances surrounding the incident before issuing a final decision, taking into account any mitigating or aggravating factors.

Although the expected sanctions may not reach the lengthy suspensions seen in famous cases in previous tournaments, the file remains open until the investigations are completed.
